Meaning of the Word


Construction Depicting the Meaning of the Word

            Our word “contrast” was particularly hard to construct and place in a location that was ordinary and not cliché. However, instead of just using color (such as black and white) or just using size contrast, we decided to make something very different and unique combing both of those aspects. Since one of the criteria was to include at least one word that was three feet tall, we used that to our advantage with the size contrast idea, and made a huge future “t” which in a way spits the two sides of the word into white and black contrast. The first three letters were constructed in a three-dimensional way so that the top letter was cut out with a white boarder and the back letter showing through as black and vise versa with the last four letters. The giant “t” helps impels the contrast even further by dividing the letter into two colors black and white. Then, to further depict the meaning of Contrast, which is all about differing aspect and showing to distinct differences, we needed to find a location that would make the word stand out. One of the locations was in Allen Fieldhouse, which has a pure white wall that was a corner so we placed the first three letters on one side and the giant “t” at the intersecting corner and the other four letters on the other side of the wall Description: Macintosh HD:Users:kyjojo22:Pictures:iPhoto Library:Previews:2011:11:08:20111108-105808:IMG_1082.JPG
This shows the word contrast because it divides the word and you can see the two differing sides of black and white, which are divided with a abnormally large letter in the middle that shows size contrast. The other location was also in Allen Fieldhouse where there was a transparent glass door and also a white wall next to it that had the same profound effect with the black and white paint, except this placement was more linear and clear to see it at a more frontal view.

Lastly, our third location was in a darker space this time that was more compact and gave it a more unique way to look at the work. The white paint really showed through in this location and it showed contrast between the two colors really well.

Team Dynamic


Team Dynamics

       My team members Faye, Jamie, Cameron and I worked extremely well together on getting our project completed in a timely manner and efficient way. We all had a lot of different contradictory ideas at the beginning on where we wanted to place it and how we wanted it to look, which became a problem on getting the project going. However we realized that if we wanted to get it done and have an exceptional piece to display to our fellow classmates, then we would have to take different aspects of each team members ideas and piece them together to make a whole. Some of us wanted to just do solid white and black to display contrast with paint on our letters, and some of us wanted to actually cut out parts of the word and let the black or white show through the back of the letter, but we decided to settle on the better design which was the cut out. Once we got passed the construction disagreements and agreed on our design it was all downhill from there and we worked long and hard to make our project aesthetically pleasing. The only other issue we had was trying to find times when we could all meet, and some of our group members not showing up to a scheduled construction time, but we managed to still get it all done by dividing and conquering and also a few times we were all together late at the design studio. It was somewhat difficult to find times where we actually had space to work in the design studio because this project needed a lot of space and work area, but the solution to that problem was to come later when most the students we gone. All in all I think our group was very collaborative and had many great ideas, which showed in our final product.

Reflection of Different Aspects of the Project


Reflection on Different Parts of the Project

            This project was definitely challenging, but it was also a huge learning experience on time management, group collaboration of ideas, group dynamic, craft, and consistency of exceptional craft all the way until the final product. This project also forced us to think on our feet when a problem occurred with craft of constructing the letters, how the group was going to work such as techniques like divide and conquer or getting it all done together. Our group did have some issues with craft and how we were going to construct our ideas at first but we didn’t settle on the easier route and just worked extremely hard on our preliminary models so that we found a way to build the final product. I think my group and myself learned a lot on how to get something large done in a short amount of time and keep consistency of craft a main concern throughout. I have never built something like that so it was a good learning experience on something I’m not familiar with. We weren’t exactly sure on how to keep our letters to stand up without falling over and how to cut out the front of the letters and keep it all together, but we learned a lot through trial and error with smaller models to produce the final image.

Written Description of the Project

            In this project “What Language Looks Like” we were organized into groups of four to collaborate ideas on how to construct a given word into a large three-dimensional cut out. We were instructed to brainstorm ideas on how to construct our word in a way that portrays the meaning in either a subtle or obvious way. Our group decided to look at all the possibilities of (contrast) and use cardboard to build it into a large three-dimensional model. Since one of our letters had to be at least three feet, we also had to take that into account with the building process. Our group build various paper models, drew out a map, and then made more refined smaller models until we settled on one main idea. Then once we had that established, we traced our giant letters on the projector in a future font so that we could outline the tracing on the cardboard. Then we had to figure out a way to put the pieces together via hot glue, tape, etc. and make the craft look exceptional. Then once the letters were completed we had to find a location that helped portray the meaning of our word even more and place it there in a unique way. For our photo book we had to photograph and document out letters in three locations that depicted the meaning of the word and also add the process photos.
